A decentralized concept for treatment of heavy metal loaded wastewater from industrial areas in rural regions in Tong Xa commune

In Tong Xa commune in the rural area of Nam Dinh Province, countless small-scale factories, above all metal -processing, smelting factories and galvanic factories, are currently releasing untreated wastewater loaded with heavy metals and organic compounds into the rice fields

  • The project develops a concept focusing on the following items
  • Anaerobic pretreatment of heavy metal loaded wastewater
  • Comparison of two different aerobic treatment techniques for wastewater
  • Treatment of sewage sludge in constructed wetlands (soilization)
  • Production of biomass and its subsequent processing to energy and alcohol
  • Production of service water for cooling and processing.

The anaerobic treatment plant is developed and established as a fully working model on the scale of 1:5 for test operation in Germanyand will later be implemented in Tong Xa commune.

The main objective of the project is the implementation of an “IWRM – Center” in Tong Xa commune consisting of the following components:

  • Treatment of domestic wastewater with a wastewater treatment plant for the equivalent of 500 inhabitants. The main treatment target is to eliminate nutrients
  • Treatment of wastewater from small-scale factories through a combined anaerobic and aerobic-technique (as described above)
  • Disinfection of treated water and its reuse as service water in industrial processes
  • Construction of a collection system for wastewater
  • Treatment of sludge to produce soil and fertilizer for the cultivation of sugar cane that eventually will be used for alcohol production.

An integrated solution for wastewater treatment and water reuse in an industrial area

The industrial park My Trung in Nam Dinh City is planned for 50 enterprises in different branches. The project will develop an integrated concept for water management in the industrial park, including the following:

  • Wastewater treatment plant (screen) and mechanical pretreatment, aerobic treatment, anaerobic treatment with production of biogas, clearing pond with rainwater storage, hygienization of treated wastewater with ozone or UV
  • Rainwater management
  • Sludge treatment
  • Anaerobic treatment of organic waste and production of natural gas (fermentation)
  • Power supply
  • Cooling water supply
  • Production of fertilizer.

Additionally, the following components are planned:

  • Power station with biogas engine and use of waste heat (for hot water production),
  • Co-treatment of organic solid waste in the anaerobic wastewater treatment
  • Collection of rainwater and feeding it into the clearing pond
